The Illinois Center for Civic Education seeks a part-time Bookkeeper/Accountant to join our team and assist the organization with financial management. This position is responsible for recording, updating, and presenting financial information to the Board of Directors and reports to the Executive Director.
The Organization
The Illinois Center for Civic Education (ICCE) is a non-profit organization that offers professional development for Illinois elementary, middle, and high school teachers on civics and government. ICCE’s main program is the Illinois We The People program which teaches students the foundations of constitutional democracy and the contemporary relevance of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The program’s culminating activity is a simulated congressional hearing in which students “testify” before a panel of judges. Students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of constitutional principles and have opportunities to evaluate, take, and defend positions on relevant historical and contemporary issues. This experience is a seminal moment for students who report its impact on their civic participation and political tolerance later in life. The Illinois We the People program has been active in the state for over 25 years. It is an exciting time for the organization as we continue to expand the We The People program across the state. Salary
This position is part-time, up to 10 hours/week with a salary range of $15 to $22 per hour based on experience. ICCE offers flexible hours as long as the person is available to respond to Executive Director and Board inquiries via email or phone during normal business hours and attend scheduled board meetings as needed. The bookkeeper/accountant is considered a 1099 independent contractor responsible for his/her own taxes and withholdings.

The Position
Key responsibilities for this position include:
- Use Quickbooks to manage, record, and update all uses of organizational funds.
- Year-end preparation including 1099 forms for contractors, financial data for annual audit and tax preparation conducted by outside CPA firm
- Maintain all files in accordance with nationally recognized standards for non-profits
- Work closely with the Executive Director to ensure accounting accuracy
- Provide monthly reports to the Executive Director and Board Treasurer
- Proactively maintain a highly organized filing system for files, invoices, reimbursements, insurance information and other financial records
- Assist in the development and implementation of systems and procedures as needed
- Prepare a quarterly report in accordance with Illinois and federal 501c3 regulations for the Board in the areas including but not limited to: all grant funds, fundraising and other revenue, and all expenditures
- Maintain open dialogue and communication with all board members, especially Board Chair and Board Treasurer
The ideal candidate will have:
- At least 1-2 years relevant professional experience with a non-profit organization
- At least 2 years budgeting and fiscal management experience
- Data Entry and basic accounting skills
- Working knowledge of QuickBooks
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Strong organizational and computer skills
- Detail-oriented and able to work both independently and as a collaborative team player
- Excellent communication skills
- Commitment to promoting civic education throughout Illinois
